Sydney, Australia

Australian Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris, announced that the NSW economy would get an injection of $211 million from 59 business events to take place in Sydney between now and the end of the year. And this month alone will see $40 million in economic value for NSW with nine international business events taking place in Sydney.

March will see more than 9,600 delegates spending 40,400 delegate days in Sydney, attending conferences and conventions.

These events include luminaries from all over the world attending four leading medical events covering human genome and atherosclerosis research, perinatal health, and gamma knife surgery.

?About half of all business travelers to Australia come to New South Wales according to Tourism Research Australia (TRA). Considering this and the year ahead, there is no doubt Sydney is not only Australia?s general events capital, but also the business event capital.

?The Government has set a target to double visitor expenditure in NSW by 2020 and a healthy business events sector will play a key role in helping us to achieve this.

?The much needed Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct will provide a catalyst for a new level of collaboration focused on bringing new business, new people and new ideas to Australia?s number one business events destination,? said Mr Souris.

Mr Souris pointed out that these conventions were secured by Business Events Sydney which is a partnership between the New South Wales Government and the private sector dedicated to promoting the Harbour City as a business events destination, identifying new event opportunities and competing to bring these events to Sydney.

The Minister for Health, Jillian Skinner, said the legacies generated from Sydney hosting previous health conventions are still strong.

?I have no doubt that the medical conferences during March and indeed others throughout the year will deliver valuable opportunities to further our medical and scientific sectors. The valuable work of these medical researchers and their global causes ultimately helps to drive innovation across the board,? she said.

Lyn Lewis Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Business Events Sydney (BESydney), said: ?March is a bumper month in Sydney with events secured by BESydney set to generate millions of dollars in economic impact for NSW, but beyond this, there will be far reaching legacies for our city?s businesses, professionals, education sector and community.?

?Business events help to improve the quality of education, disseminate the latest technical practices, forge international networks and drive business collaboration, trade and investment opportunities. They are also effective platforms to profile world changing issues and drive social change.?
