(AP) ? With glittering fireworks and star-studded celebrations from New Zealand to Times Square, the world eagerly welcomed a new year and hoped for a better future Saturday, saying goodbye to a year of hurricanes, tsunamis and economic turmoil that many would rather forget.

Revelers in Australia, Asia, Europe, South America and the South Pacific island nation of Samoa, which jumped across the international dateline to be first to celebrate, welcomed 2012 with booming pyrotechnic displays. Fireworks soared and sparked over Moscow's Red Square, crowds on Paris' Champs-Elysees boulevard popped Champagne corks at midnight, and up to a million revelers were expected to jam New York's Times Square for the famed crystal-paneled ball drop.

But many approached the new year with more relief than joy, as people battered by weather disasters, joblessness and economic uncertainty hoped the stroke of midnight would change their fortunes.

"Once the ball drops, I won't give 2011 another thought," said Kyralee Scott, 16, of Jackson, N.J., whose father spent most of the year out of work. "It was a pretty tough year, but God was looking after us and I know 2012 has got to be better."

Some New York revelers, wearing party hats and "2012" glasses, began camping out Saturday morning, even as workers readied bags stuffed with hundreds of balloons and technicians put colored filters on klieg lights. The crowds cheered as workers lit the crystal-paneled ball that drops at midnight Saturday and put it through a test run, 400 feet above the street. The sphere, now decorated with 3,000 Waterford crystal triangles, has been dropping to mark the new year since 1907, long before television made it a U.S. tradition.

In Times Square, hundreds of thousands people were crammed into spectator pens ringed by barricades, enjoying surprisingly warm weather for the Northeast this time of year. The National Weather Service said Saturday it was about 49 degrees in nearby Central Park. That's about 10 degrees warmer than the normal high temperature this time of year.

As the country prepared for the celebration, glum wasn't on the agenda for many, even those who had a sour year.

"We're hoping the next year will be better," said Becky Martin, a former elementary school teacher who drove from Rockford, Ill., to Times Square after spending a fruitless year trying to find a job. "We're starting off optimistic and hoping it lasts."

Many expressed cautious hope that better times were ahead after a year in which Japan was ravaged by an earthquake and tsunami, hurricanes wreaked havoc across the country and a debt crisis devastated Europe's economy.

"Everybody's suffering. That's why it's so beautiful to be here celebrating something with everybody," said Lisa Nicol, 47, of Melbourne, Australia.

For all of the holiday's bittersweet potential, New York City always treats it like a big party ? albeit one that now takes place under the watchful eye of a massive security force, including more than 1,500 police officers.

Dick Clark, who suffered a stroke in 2004, was scheduled to return to help host his namesake New Year's Eve celebration with Ryan Seacrest, featuring performances by Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Lady Gaga will then join Mayor Michael Bloomberg to lead the 60-second countdown to the New Year.

In Las Vegas, police shut down a four-mile section of the Strip to vehicle traffic six hours before midnight, letting revelers party in the street. Casino nightclubs touted pricey, exclusive bashes hosted by celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Fergie, and fireworks were expected to shoot from the rooftops of eight of the city's most famous casinos.

Atlanta was welcoming thousands to its downtown, where a giant peach is dropped every New Year's Eve at midnight. Fireworks were to be launched from the top of the Space Needle in Seattle; in Houston, tens of thousands were celebrating at a party with country singer Delbert McClinton.

In summer temperatures at Key West, Fla., three separate New Year's Eve drops were planned for midnight celebrations. A giant facsimile of a conch shell would be lowered at Sloppy Joe's Bar, Ernest Hemingway's favorite watering hole when he lived in Key West.

At the Schooner Wharf Bar, the bar owner dressed as a pirate wench would drop down from a mast of a tall sailing ship. And at the Bourbon Street Pub complex, a drag queen named Sushi would descend in a glittering 6-foot red women's high heel.

The town of Eastport, Maine, will lower an 8-foot-long wooden sardine from a downtown building at midnight, in celebration of its sardine canning and fishing history.

In San Francisco, the waterfront is expected to be lined with revelers for the annual fireworks show. Though the city's fickle weather and persistent fog can never be counted on to cooperate, forecasters say the skies above the city should be clear overnight.

The first worldwide celebrations started in the island nation of Samoa, which hopped across the international date line at midnight on Thursday, skipping Friday and moving instantly to Saturday.

Samoa and the neighboring nation of Tokelau lie near the dateline that zigzags vertically through the Pacific Ocean; both sets of islands decided to realign themselves this year from the Americas side of the line to the Asia side to be more in tune with key trading partners.

In Sydney, more than 1.5 million people watched the shimmering pyrotechnic display designed around the theme "Time to Dream." In London, some 250,000 people gathered to listen to Big Ben chime at the stroke of midnight.

World leaders evoked 2011's struggles in their New Year's messages with some ambivalence.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned Europe's crisis is not finished and "that 2012 will be the year full of risks, but also of possibilities."

Pope Benedict XVI marked the end of 2011 with prayers of thanks and said humanity awaits the new year with apprehension but also with hope for a better future.

"We prepare to cross the threshold of 2012, remembering that the Lord watches over us and takes care of us," Benedict said. "In him this evening we want to entrust the entire world. We put into his hands the tragedies of this world of ours, and we also offer him the hopes for a better future."

In Brazil, heavy rains didn't halt parties as upward of 2 million people gathered on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro and nearly as many on a main avenue in Sao Paulo, South America's biggest city. Massive fireworks displays and top music acts graced stages across the nation.

Brazil has seen healthy economic growth in recent years, as the country prepares to host the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. Growth, however, has stalled in recent months, and Brazilian leaders are trying to stimulate the economy in the new year.

"This was a good year for Brazil and I think things are only getting better, it feels like we're making big advances," said Fabiana dos Santos Silva, an 18-year-old student who gathered with hundreds of thousands of others on a main avenue in Sao Paulo.

Several people preparing to celebrate the holiday in the U.S. told the AP that they would usher in the New Year hoping the Congress would become a more cooperative place. Some talked about their hopes for the presidential election. Others said they hoped to hold on to their job, or find a new one to replace one they'd lost.

An Associated Press-GfK poll conducted Dec. 8-12 found that 62 percent of Americans are optimistic that the nation's fortunes will improve in 2012, and 78 percent hopeful that their own family will have a better year. Most wrote off 2011 as a dud.

Debbie Hart, 50, of Perry, Ga., called herself the "perpetual optimist" who believes each year will be better than the one before.

"I married a farmer. 'Wait until next year. Next year will be better.' That's what I've been hearing for 30 years," said Hart. "I have faith."

Is Morocco really ready for a mega mall? (AP)

CASABLANCA, Morocco ? Inaugurated by popstar Jennifer Lopez in front of the cream of Moroccan society, Casablanca's first mega mall, complete with two-story-high aquarium, is dripping with glamour and luxury.

While developers describe it as a step bringing Morocco closer to the ranks of the developed world, detractors worry that it is a vanity project that a country teetering on the edge of an economic crisis can ill afford.

Morocco at first seems a curious choice for what its developers are billing as the biggest mall in Africa. It already has world-renowned traditional bazaars featuring exquisite ceramics and rugs that draw tourists from across the globe.

The North African kingdom of 32 million is home to the largest income inequalities in the Arab world ? and now hosts Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior and Ralph Lauren boutiques and department store Galeries Lafayette in the new mall, a futuristic, bulbous silver structure perched on Morocco's coast overlooking the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

It is a stark symbol of the contrasts of a country with 8.5 million people in poverty that ranks 130 out of 186 on the U.N.'s human development index, but will still host acts like Shakira and Kanye West for a summer concert series.

The 20-minute coastal drive from downtown Casablanca ? Morocco's largest city ? to the mall showcases the complexity of the country, with slums hidden from sight by high walls, construction areas for new shopping centers and finally the villas and night clubs of the wealthy.

"It is a great honor for Morocco to have a project of such dimensions," said Salwa Akhannouch, head of the Aksal group and the driving force behind the mall, at its opening this month.

Most Moroccans will not be shopping at the mall.

The country has some of the lowest literacy and highest unemployment rates and the highest income disparity in the Middle East and North Africa, according to the Gini coefficient, a statistical tool used by economists to measure the inequality of distribution in a country. The disparity has been growing every year.

Crowds packed the mall in the weeks after it opened, ambling through sunlit galleries and gazing at the aquarium and the 350 stores on offer. Periodically, colorfully dressed performers, some from as far away as Eastern Europe, would burst into enthusiastic dance routines to the accompaniment of loud drums.

There were few shopping bags in sight, however, and most seemed just curious to finally see this much-talked-about monument to shopping that has been four years and $260 million in the making.

"There is a big gulf between the rich and the poor and the rich just seem to be getting richer and the poor, poorer _the mall is a symbol of that," said Hassan Ali, a 45-year-old shopkeeper selling handtooled leather jackets in Casablanca's modest old quarter.

Tourism is a vital part of the mall's plan, according to its secretary general, Jenane Laghrar, who anticipates 20 percent of its estimated 12 million annual visitors will come from abroad. She said sales for the first week were on target.

"When you enter the mall, you see Gucci and Dior, but don't forget you have the largest content in Africa ? at the same time you have more affordable brands," she said.

There is also an aspiring middle class that wants to be able to buy these luxury products, she added.

The hope is also that European tourists will add to their usual itinerary of beaches and the exotic cities of Fez and Marrakech, a trip to Casablanca ? and the mall.

Laghrar said they are especially hoping to attract visitors from the rest of Africa who pass through Casablanca airport on their way to Europe.

For now, however, visitors from Africa make up less than 5 percent of Morocco's tourists, with the vast majority still from Europe.

This could well be a problem as the European continent sinks into crisis, said economist Najib Akesbi, and in fact Europe's woes pose a dilemma for the Moroccan economy as a whole, which is deeply intertwined with its neighbors across the Mediterranean.

Morocco's main sources of hard currency, including foreign investment, tourism and remittances from its workers abroad, overwhelmingly come from Europe. On Dec. 20, the government reduced growth projections for 2012 by half a percentage point in response to Europe's crisis.

"The world is entering a period of crisis, the next four or five years are not going to be years of prosperity," warned Akesbi, who teaches at the Hassan II Institute for Agronomy in the capital Rabat.

For him the Morocco Mall is part of a bet Morocco is making that it can become a kind of Dubai for the western Mediterranean, attracting consumers from across Africa and Europe to make up for weak local demand.

"It is a bit of a fragile model," he said. "The success depends less on durable local demand than betting on foreign demand."

The mall's developers point to Morocco's consistent growth of between 4 and 5 percent for the past few years as a sign that the economy can support this kind of luxury shopping.

Those growth figures, however, are not producing jobs, and unemployment overall is at least 8 percent, while for those under 34 it is a staggering 30 percent.

Pro-democracy demonstrations that rose up in Morocco earlier this year have faded away, but there are still regular protests by the millions of unemployed university graduates across the country, frustrated at their prospects.

Investment has not been in sectors like industry that produce a lot of jobs, rather in retail, services and infrastructure that have not been creating the employment the nation needs, said Akesbi.

And the economy is still at the whim of the annual agricultural harvest. Part of the reason for the country's steady growth recently has been good weather.

"Here we are in 2011 and the economy is still largely determined by the sky," said Akesbi. Even though only 25 percent of the economy relies on agriculture, it employs 40 percent of the work force and a bad harvest can hurt other sectors.

The government budget is also dangerously overstretched, after it increased food subsidies and raise government salaries in a bid to stave off the anti-government unrest sweeping the Arab world.

The Morocco Mall project was conceived in the headier days of the mid-2000s when it was decided that what the country needed was more shopping centers.

While Europe falters, the wealthy oil states of the Gulf are playing a role in building a more consumerist Morocco.

Half the funding for Morocco Mall comes from the Saudi Al-Jedaie Group which has built malls across Saudi Arabia and two new initiatives looks set to shower Morocco with Gulf money.

PS Vita second week hardware sales plummet in Japan

Sony's PS Vita portable console launched in Japan on December 17 and one third party report claimed later that 321,000 units of the console were sold in Japan in its first two days. Now a new report claims that sales of the PS Vita have basically dropped off a cliff during the second week of the console's sales in Japan.

AllThingsD.com reports that according to the Japanese research firm Media Create sales of the PS Vita went down to just 72,479 units in the second week of sales in that country. The sales of the PS Vita were just below those of the Playstation 3 console and well below the number one best selling console in Japan, Nintendo's 3DS portable console with 482,200 units sold.

The article speculates that the drastically lower second week sales for the PS Vita might have to do with inventory issues. However, there are no reports that indicate that their is a shortage of PS Vita units on sale. The far more likely explanation is that the PS Vita is priced much higher than current portable game consoles and as such is keeping consumers from purchasing it, even during the normally busy Christmas sales week.

Meanwhile the PS Vita is still set to debut in the US and Europe on February 22. Sony will likely demo US-themed PS Vita launch games at CES in early January.

London Irish 29 Exeter 22: Toby Booth backs Delon Armitage

By David Kent

Last updated at 6:55 PM on 27th December 2011

London Irish coach Toby Booth defended a first-half incident involving Delon Armitage at the Madejski Stadium which could land the England star in more hot water.

The full-back clattered into Exeter fly half Ignacio Mieres with an arm around his head as the Argentinian fielded the ball by his own 22.

Mieres was left shaken for a few minutes on the touchline.

Armitage only returned to action with Irish this month after a five-week ban for a dangerous tackle on Bath wing Tom Biggs and a concurrent ban for striking lock Dave Attwood with his knee in the same match on October 29.

It was his fourth suspension in 2011. Booth played down the incident but officials may want to look into it due to the player's troubled record.

He said: 'He went in for a tackle from behind and, as the player has bent down, he has gone up over the top of him. It is a penalty at most. But because of what has gone before, people will have a closer look.'

Exeter coach Rob Baxter added: 'There is definitely an arm over the top. That is not alleged, you can see that clearly.'

Centres Joe Ansbro, in the first half, and Shontayne Hape after the break touched down for Irish, while wing Tom Homer, the Premiership's leading points scorer, added 19 more with five penalties and two conversions.

Exeter were always chasing the game after Ansbro's early try, but showed fighting spirit with Mieres kicking five penalties and converting a try from full-back Luke Arscott.

T.I., Dr. Dre 'Creating Chemistry' In Latest Collabo

'Of course we can get together, he got hot beats and I got dope rhymes,' T.I. tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX

No matter your stature in rap, working with Dr. Dre is a pretty big deal. Newcomers like Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster have seen their careers grow considerably after working with the good doctor, while veterans like Busta Rhymes and 50 Cent have marveled at Dre's in-studio work ethic. For T.I., however, simply working with the West Coast production king isn't enough. He wants to develop a tighter musical bond.

On Tuesday (December 28), Tip leaked a trailer for the mixtape F--- da City Up that showed him and Dre working together in the studio.

"Dre was here. He sent for me over to the spot. We really just turned up more than anything else. It was about creating chemistry," T.I. told MTV News while he was in Atlanta preparing for the New Year's Day release of the mixtape.

This isn't the first time that the King of the South has collaborated with the California legend. A few years ago, "Topless," a song that was said to be recorded for Dre's oft-delayed Detox, leaked onto the Internet. According to T.I., their most recent session was a fruitful one.

"Of course we can get together, he got hot beats and I got dope rhymes, so we can always get together and make music," Tip said. "But for people to feel what we're sayin' and for it to sound like a party comin' through your speakers, you gonna have to create some chemistry. So that's what we spent more time doin' than anything else; developing that chemistry."

Biggest Windows 8 news for week ending Dec. 23

The big news this week regarding Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 software was that it features picture passwords, something that drew widespread attention but also some skepticism. Otherwise it was a week of rumors about what other features Microsoft's next big software release might contain and devices that might be coming out specifically to support it.

Picture Password

Microsoft has revealed a number of details on the Building Windows 8 blog regarding a new feature coming to Windows 8 dubbed "Picture Password". Upon hearing the name of the feature, you may assume (incorrectly) that it's some sort of integrated face recognition technique, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the contents of the picture used for the login password are somewhat irrelevant. It's actually touch gestures overlayed over the photo that are the foundation of Windows 8's picture password feature.

The big news this week regarding Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 software was that it features picture passwords, something that drew widespread attention but also some skepticism.

QUIZ: 2011 Tech News Quiz?

A Microsoft product manager says: "At its core, your picture password is comprised of two complementary parts. There is a picture from your picture collection and a set of gestures that you draw upon it. Instead of having you pick from a canned set of Microsoft images, you provide the picture, because it increases both the security and the memorability of the password. You get to decide the content of the picture and the portions that are important to you. Plus, you get to see a picture that is important to you just like many people do on their phone lock screen."?

Picture password is a toy

The major downside of the picture password is that drawing a finger across a photo on a touch screen is easy to video record from a distance - making it relatively easy to compromise, says Kenneth Weiss, who invented SecurID tokens and now runs a three-factor authentication business called Universal Secure Registry. Designers of alpha-numeric passwords recognize this danger and have responded to it by having password characters appear as dots on the screen so the password can't be copied down.

"I think it's cute," he says. "I don't think it's serious security."?

Windows 8 to drive touchscreen sales

According to unnamed sources, makers of LCD touchscreens are expecting a spike in sales toward the end of 2012 in part thanks to the expected release of Windows 8, which capitalizes on touchscreen navigation and commands, including the above-mentioned picture password. Screen makers ViewSonic and Asustek say they expect vendors will be eager to launch touch monitors next year, all according to Digitimes.

Nokia tablet for Windows 8 rumor

Nokia is rumored to be making a tablet designed for Windows 8 that it will unveil at Nokia Connection 2012 in mid-June. That's the extent of the rumor as repeated by Stefan Constantinescu at intomobile.com. He says he's relaying what was posted at the DGui blog, which has since been hacked and remains down. The source of this rumor? Someone with a Finnish IP address who claims to work for Finland-based Nokia.

Nokia tablet for Windows 8 concept design

Over at concept-phones.com a posting lays down specs for a Windows 8 tablet designed by someone identified as Cameron McKinnon. Here's a taste of what he calls for: "Nokia Tab uses a massive 14.3 inch display, a 12 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss lens, plus Microsoft Kinect motion capture support through a front camera. The gadget is 12mm in thickness, it has 1GB of memory, a 64GB or 128GB HDD and it will be available in WiFi or WiFi + 4G models, if it's ever made."

Windows 8 a Top Tech for 2012

IEEE Spectrum Magazine has listed Windows 8 among the Top Tech for 2012, alongside 4G wireless, 3D printers, Chinese supercomputers, LED lighting and electric vehicle charging stations. Of Windows 8, IEEE Spectrum writes: "Microsoft has so far been sidelined by the industry-wide move to mobile platforms, such as smart phones and tablets. This new operating system is the Redmond, Wash., company's last, best hope to turn things around."

CIA watchdog OKs New York police partnership

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The CIA says its inspector general has found nothing wrong with the spy agency's close partnership with the New York City Police Department.

The inspector general concluded that no laws were broken and no evidence exists that the CIA was conducting forbidden domestic spying.

The inspector general decided to do a preliminary investigation after a series of stories by The Associated Press revealed how, after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks the CIA helped the NYPD build domestic intelligence programs that were used to spy on Muslims.

The revelations troubled some members of Congress and even prompted the U.S. director of national intelligence, James Clapper, to remark that it did not look good for the CIA to be involved with any city police department.

The close NYPD-CIA relationship continues.

Zealand ? A series of strong earthquakes struck the New Zealand city of Christchurch on Friday, rattling buildings, sending goods tumbling from shelves and prompting terrified holiday shoppers to flee into the streets. There was no tsunami alert issued and the city appeared to have been spared major damage.</p> <p>One person was injured at a city mall and was taken to a hospital, and four people had to be rescued after being trapped by a rock fall, Christchurch police said in a statement. But there were no immediate reports of serious injuries or widespread damage in the city, which is still recovering from a devastating February earthquake that killed 182 people and destroyed much of the downtown area.</p> <p>The first 5.8-magnitude quake struck Friday afternoon, 16 miles (26 kilometers) north of Christchurch and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) deep, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Minutes later, a 5.3-magnitude aftershock hit. About an hour after that, the city was shaken by another 5.8-magnitude temblor, the U.S.G.S. said, though New Zealand's geological agency GNS Science recorded that aftershock as a magnitude-6.0. Both aftershocks were less than 3 miles (5 kilometers) deep.</p> <p>The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue an alert.</p> <p>The city's airport was evacuated after the first quake and all city malls shut down as a precaution.</p> <p>About 60 people were treated for minor injuries, including fractures, injuries sustained in falls and people with "emotional difficulties," Christchurch St. John Ambulance operations manager Tony Dowell told The Associated Press.</p> <p>"We have had no significant injuries reported as a result of the earthquakes today," he said.</p> <p>Warwick Isaacs, demolitions manager for the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, said most buildings had been evacuated "as an emergency measure." The area has recorded more than 7,000 earthquakes since a magnitude-7.0 quake rocked the city on Sept. 4, 2010. That quake did not cause any deaths.</p> <p>Rock falls had occurred in one area and there was liquefaction ? when an earthquake forces underground water up through loose soil ? in several places, Isaacs told New Zealand's National Radio.</p> <p>"There has been quite a lot of stuff falling out of cupboards, off shelves in shops and that sort of thing, again," he said.</p> <p>Isaacs said his immediate concern was for demolition workers involved in tearing down buildings wrecked in previous quakes.</p> <p>"It ... started slow then really got going. It was a big swaying one but not as jolting or as violent as in February," Christchurch resident Rita Langley said. "Everyone seems fairly chilled, though the traffic buildup sounds like a beehive that has just been kicked as everyone leaves (the) town (center)."</p> <p>The shaking was severe in the nearby port town of Lyttelton, the epicenter of the Feb. 22 quake.</p> <p>"We stayed inside until the shaking stopped. Then most people went out into the street outside," resident Andrew Turner said. "These two aspects of youths' adjustment may at times exacerbate one another, leading over the course of time to more of each."</p> <p>Because chronically missing school might influence the development of mental health issues and vice versa, researchers said programs that treat both mental health issues and school absenteeism are important.</p> <p><b>More information</b></p> <p>The Anxiety Disorders Association of America provides more information on childhood anxiety and depression.</p><p>Source: <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/health/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20111223/hl_hsn/chronicschoolabsenteeismlinkedtomentalhealthproblems">http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/health/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20111223/hl_hsn/chronicschoolabsenteeismlinkedtomentalhealthproblems</a></p><p><a href="http://wallinside.com/post-600275.html">trisomy 18</a> <a href="http://www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/adopting-a-pet-dog-puppy-dog-as-well-as-grownup">oklahoma state</a> <a href="http://www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/assistance-to-getting-optimistic-encouragement-as-well-as-benefits-to-coach-your-pet">new orleans saints</a> <a href="http://www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/attributes-of-chicken-coming-up">venus williams</a> <a href="http://www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/cameras-complies-with-volvo-s40-only-two2">farrah abraham</a> <a href="http://www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/information-on-taking-on-any-pitbull">whats going on</a> <a href="http://www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/innovative-canine-training-items-with-regard-to-training-your-canine">bowl projections</a> </p> <div style='clear: both;'></div> </div> <div class='post-footer'> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'> <span class='post-author vcard'> Posted by <span class='fn' itemprop='author' itemscope='itemscope' itemtype='http://schema.org/Person'> <meta content='https://www.blogger.com/profile/06399266587498128112' itemprop='url'/> <a class='g-profile' href='https://www.blogger.com/profile/06399266587498128112' rel='author' title='author profile'> <span itemprop='name'>sebastianstanbe</span> </a> </span> </span> <span class='post-timestamp'> at <meta content='http://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/chronic-school-absenteeism-linked-to.html' itemprop='url'/> <a class='timestamp-link' href='https://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/chronic-school-absenteeism-linked-to.html' rel='bookmark' title='permanent link'><abbr class='published' itemprop='datePublished' title='2011-12-25T17:00:00-08:00'>17:00</abbr></a> </span> <span class='post-comment-link'> <a class='comment-link' href='https://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/chronic-school-absenteeism-linked-to.html#comment-form' onclick=''> No comments: </a> </span> <span class='post-icons'> <span class='item-control blog-admin pid-1707683615'> <a href='https://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=3917219525126535806&from=pencil' title='Edit Post'> <img alt='' class='icon-action' height='18' src='https://resources.blogblog.com/img/icon18_edit_allbkg.gif' width='18'/> </a> </span> </span> <div class='post-share-buttons goog-inline-block'> <a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-email' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=3917219525126535806&target=email' target='_blank' title='Email This'><span class='share-button-link-text'>Email This</span></a><a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=3917219525126535806&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); Radiation is measured in SAR (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/27/website-rates-best-and-worst-cellphones-by-radiation-output-leve/">Specific Absorption Rate</a>) and the Indian limit has been lowered to match the USA's 1.6W/kg, whereas before it followed the European ceiling of 2W/kg. But even handsets that meet this criterion may have to declare their SAR level, and also carry a message asking people to keep their calls or short or use SMS instead -- implying that the Indian government regards radiation as dangerous at <em>any</em> level.</div> <br /> [Thanks, Yogesh]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/23/india-cellphones-generate-radiation-send-a-text-message-instea/">India: cellphones generate radiation, send a text message instead</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 23 Dec 2011 07:31:00 EDT. A grand jury has indicted a New York City man on first-degree murder charges accusing him of killing a 73-year-old woman by dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire, authorities said Friday.</p> <p>The indictment also charges Jerome Isaac with arson. He was not in court Friday in Brooklyn when a prosecutor informed a judge of the formal charges.</p> <p>Outside court, defense attorney Howard Tanner told reporters that the murder indictment was expected. He said he was in touch with his client and would "evaluate all possible defenses" but declined to elaborate.</p> <p>An arraignment ? when Isaac would enter a plea ? wasn't scheduled. He's being held without bail.</p> <p>Isaac, 47, was arrested Sunday in what New York authorities called one of the most gruesome crimes in recent memory.</p> <p>The defendant had done odd jobs for the victim, Delores Gillespie. But they had a falling out and, believing she owned him $2,000, Isaac confronted Gillespie in her Brooklyn apartment building outfitted like an exterminator with a canister sprayer full of gasoline, police said.</p> <p>A building security camera captured Isaac cornering Gillespie in an elevator and spraying her with gasoline as she cowered in the corner. He then used a barbecue-style lighter to ignite a Molotov cocktail, before tossing it into the elevator and leaving his victim to die in a fireball, police said.</p> <p>Isaac fled the building with burns on his face, authorities said. He then hid on a nearby rooftop in the winter cold for hours before he surrendered, reeking of gasoline, they said.</p><p>Source: <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/crime/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20111223/ap_on_re_us/us_woman_torched">http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/crime/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20111223/ap_on_re_us/us_woman_torched</a></p><p><a href="http://emilioperez1128.posterous.com/would-you-erase-the-game-data-when-you-mail-y">tj houshmandzadeh</a> <a href="http://jeffsnider264.skyrock.com/3055548563-Might-You-Erase-Your-Information-When-You-Ship-Your-Sony-PS3-To-Sony.html">san onofre</a> <a href="http://ps3repair538.blog.com/2011/12/23/if-you-mail-your-sony-playstation-3-to-sony-to-get-repair-will-you-erase-your-data/">the little couple</a> <a href="http://www.migente.com/your_page/blog/view_posting.html?pid=1557995&profile_id=6759513&profile_name=timbishop9239&user_id=6759513&username=timbishop9239">bubba smith</a> <a href="http://community.atom.com/Post/Will-You-Lose-Your-Information-If-You-Send-Your-Sony-PS3-To-Sony-To-get-Refurbishing/03EFBFFFF025098B60008017AE2B4">bubba smith</a> <a href="http://emilioperez1128.lache-tes.com/p62159/2011-12-23-might-you-erase-your-information-in-case-you-ship-your-sony-ps3-to-sony-for-repairs.html">oakland strike</a> <a href="http://greenvoice.com/groups/26844-when-you-ship-a-sony-playstation-3-to-sony-for-service-will-you-forfeit-your-data/topics/26866">new gmail</a> </p> <div style='clear: both;'></div> </div> <div class='post-footer'> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'> <span class='post-author vcard'> Posted by <span class='fn' itemprop='author' itemscope='itemscope' itemtype='http://schema.org/Person'> <meta content='https://www.blogger.com/profile/06399266587498128112' itemprop='url'/> <a class='g-profile' href='https://www.blogger.com/profile/06399266587498128112' rel='author' title='author profile'> <span itemprop='name'>sebastianstanbe</span> </a> </span> </span> <span class='post-timestamp'> at <meta content='http://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/murder-charge-for-nyc-man-accused-of.html' itemprop='url'/> <a class='timestamp-link' href='https://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/murder-charge-for-nyc-man-accused-of.html' rel='bookmark' title='permanent link'><abbr class='published' itemprop='datePublished' title='2011-12-25T13:10:00-08:00'>13:10</abbr></a> </span> <span class='post-comment-link'> <a class='comment-link' href='https://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/murder-charge-for-nyc-man-accused-of.html#comment-form' onclick=''> No comments: </a> </span> <span class='post-icons'> <span class='item-control blog-admin pid-1707683615'> <a href='https://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=6992532540639834075&from=pencil' title='Edit Post'> <img alt='' class='icon-action' height='18' src='https://resources.blogblog.com/img/icon18_edit_allbkg.gif' width='18'/> </a> </span> </span> <div class='post-share-buttons goog-inline-block'> <a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-email' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=6992532540639834075&target=email' target='_blank' title='Email This'><span class='share-button-link-text'>Email This</span></a><a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=6992532540639834075&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); Tens of thousands of tourists and Christian pilgrims packed the West Bank town of Bethlehem for Christmas Eve celebrations Saturday, bringing warm holiday cheer to the traditional birthplace of Jesus on a raw, breezy and rainy night.</p> <p>With turnout at its highest in more than a decade, proud Palestinian officials said they were praying the celebrations would bring them closer to their dream of independence.</p> <p>Meanwhile, Christmas celebrations began to take place around the globe, with Pope Benedict XVI celebrating Christmas Eve Mass two hours before midnight at Vatican City and urging the faithful to look beyond the commercialization of the holiday and discover its true meaning.</p> <p>"Let us ask the Lord to help us see through the superficial glitter of this season, and to discover behind it the child in the stable in Bethlehem, so as to find true joy and true light," Benedict told congregants in a packed St. Peter's Basilica.</p> <p>Bethlehem, like the rest of the West Bank, fell onto hard times after the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation broke out in late 2000. As the fighting has subsided in recent years, the tourists have returned in large numbers.</p> <p>By late night, the Israeli military, which controls movement in and out of town, said some 100,000 visitors, including foreigners and Arab Christians from Israel, had reached Bethlehem, up from 70,000 the previous year.</p> <p>Thousands of Palestinians from inside West Bank also converged on the town.</p> <p>"It's wonderful to be where Jesus was born," said Irma Goldsmith, 68, of Suffolk, Virginia. "I watch Christmas in Bethlehem each year on TV, but to be here in person is different. To be in the spot where our savior was born is amazing."</p> <p>After nightfall, a packed Manger Square, along with a 50-foot-tall (15-meter-tall) Christmas tree, was awash in Christmas lights, and the town took on a festival-like atmosphere.</p> <p>Vendors hawked balloons and corn on the cob, and bands played Christmas songs and tourists packed cafes that are sleepy the rest of the year. As rain began falling in the early evening, many people cleared out of the square and raced to nearby restaurants.</p> <p>Festivities were to culminate with Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity, built over the grotto where tradition says Jesus was born.</p> <p>Among the visitors were a surprisingly large number of veiled Muslim women with their families, out to enjoy an evening out in what is normally a quiet town.</p> <p>"We love to share this holiday with our Christian brothers," said Amal Ayash, 46, who came to Manger Square with her three daughters, all of them covered in veils. "It is a Palestinian holiday and we love to come here and watch."</p> <p>Israel turned Bethlehem over to Palestinian civil control a few days before Christmas in 1995, and since then, residents have been celebrating the holiday regardless of their religion.</p> <p>Pilgrims from around the world also wandered the streets, singing Christmas carols and visiting churches.</p> <p>"It's a real treat to come here," said John Houston, 58, a restaurant owner from Long Beach, California. "It makes me feel really good to see what I have been learning from the time I was a kid in Sunday school until today."</p> <p>Houston said he was surprised by Bethlehem's appearance, which is a far cry from the pastoral village of biblical times. Today, it is a sprawling town of cement apartment blocs and narrow streets that combined with several surrounding communities has a population of some 50,000 people.</p> <p>Located on the southeastern outskirts of Jerusalem, Bethlehem is surrounded on three sides by a barrier Israel built to stop Palestinian militants from attacking last decade. </p><p> Palestinians say the barrier has damaged their economy by constricting movement in and out of town. Twenty-two percent of Bethlehem residents are unemployed, the Palestinian Authority says. Israeli settlements surrounding Bethlehem have added to the sense of confinement. </p><p> The Christmas season is essential for Bethlehem's economy, which depends heavily on tourism. </p><p> Most visitors entering Bethlehem, including the top Roman Catholic official in the Holy Land, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, had to cross through an Israeli-controlled checkpoint to reach town. </p><p> Twal, a Palestinian citizen of Jordan, arrived in a traditional midday procession from Jerusalem, and later, celebrated Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity. </p><p> In his homily, he referred to the Arab Spring, imploring Arab leaders to have "wisdom, insight and a spirit of selflessness toward their countrymen" and praying for reconciliation in Syria, Egypt, Iraq and North Africa. </p><p> He also noted the Palestinian campaign to join the United Nations, and complained that the U.N. was "less than united" in its support for the now-stalled initiative. He also criticized the international community for pushing the Palestinians to "re-engage in a failed peace process" which has "left a bitter taste of broken promises and of mistrust." </p><p> The patriarch lamented the Israeli barrier enveloping Bethlehem ? "let us tear down the walls of our hearts in order to tear down the walls of concrete" ? and prayed for peace for both Palestinians and Israelis </p><p> The Palestinians have subtly tried to draw attention to their plight with this year's Christmas slogan, "Palestine celebrating hope," a veiled reference to their bid to win U.N. recognition. With peace talks at a standstill, the Palestinians are seeking membership as a state in the United Nations and recently gained admission to UNESCO, the U.N. cultural agency. </p><p> "We are celebrating this Christmas hoping that in the near future we'll get our right to self-determination, our right to establish our own democratic, secular Palestinian state on the Palestinian land. That is why this Christmas is unique," said Mayor Victor Batarseh, who is Christian. </p><p> Late Saturday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told a meeting of Christian leaders that he is committed to reaching peace with Israel, despite a three-year standstill in negotiations. </p><p> "I hope they will come back to their senses and understand that we are seekers of peace, not seekers of war or terrorism," said Abbas, a Muslim. "The mosque, church and synagogue stand side by side in this Holy Land." </p><p> Today, only about one-third of Bethlehem's residents are Christian, reflecting a broader exodus of Christians from the Middle East in recent decades. Overall, just 60,000 Christians live in the Palestinian territories, making up less than 2 percent of the population, according to Palestinian officials. </p><p> At the Vatican, Benedict kicked off an intense two weeks of public appearances that will test the 84-year-old pontiff's stamina amid signs that fatigue is starting to slow him down. </p><p> The Christmas Eve Mass was moved up to 10 p.m. from midnight several years ago to spare the pope a late night that is followed by an important Christmas Day speech. In a new concession this year, Benedict processed down the basilica's central aisle on a moving platform to spare him the long walk. </p><p> Benedict appeared tired by the end of the Mass and a dry cough interrupted his homily. </p><p> On Sunday, Benedict will deliver his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "to the city and the world," from the central loggia of St. Peter's overlooking the piazza. Usually, the speech is a survey of sorts of the hardships and wars confronting humanity, and ends with the pope delivering Christmas greetings in dozens of languages. </p><p> President Barack Obama was spending the holiday with his family in Hawaii. In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama wished all Americans a merry Christmas and happy holidays, with a special message of thanks to U.S. troops, especially those serving in Afghanistan. </p><p> "Let's take a moment to give thanks for their service; for their families' service; for our veterans' service," the president said Saturday. Obama noted that with the Iraq war over, the last troops from that conflict are home for the holidays. </p><p> ___ </p><p> Associated Press writer Nicole Winfield contributed to this report from Vatican City.</p><p>Source: <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/topstories/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20111224/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_holy_land_christmas">http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/topstories/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20111224/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_holy_land_christmas</a></p><p><a href="http://catblog6.wordpress.com/2011/12/09/tips-on-implementing-any-pitbull/">gop debate live</a> <a href="http://catblog6.wordpress.com/2011/12/13/air-flow-deflectors-functional-along-with-attractive/">gop debate live</a> <a href="http://catinfo3.wordpress.com/2011/12/11/using-a-new-security-pet/">nome alaska</a> <a href="http://clarencejone112.insanejournal.com/2393.html">nome alaska</a> <a href="http://clarencejone112.livejournal.com/2635.html">alaska map</a> <a href="http://clarencejone1127.posterous.com/using-the-security-puppy">bil keane</a> <a href="http://community.atom.com/Post/Adopting-a-shelter-dog--Puppy-dog-Or-perhaps-Grownup/03EFBFFFF0249C910000801773DF6">storm in alaska</a> </p> <div style='clear: both;'></div> </div> <div class='post-footer'> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'> <span class='post-author vcard'> Posted by <span class='fn' itemprop='author' itemscope='itemscope' itemtype='http://schema.org/Person'> <meta content='https://www.blogger.com/profile/06399266587498128112' itemprop='url'/> <a class='g-profile' href='https://www.blogger.com/profile/06399266587498128112' rel='author' title='author profile'> <span itemprop='name'>sebastianstanbe</span> </a> </span> </span> <span class='post-timestamp'> at <meta content='http://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/thousands-enjoy-merry-christmas-in.html' itemprop='url'/> <a class='timestamp-link' href='https://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/thousands-enjoy-merry-christmas-in.html' rel='bookmark' title='permanent link'><abbr class='published' itemprop='datePublished' title='2011-12-25T04:25:00-08:00'>04:25</abbr></a> </span> <span class='post-comment-link'> <a class='comment-link' href='https://sebastianstanbe.blogspot.com/2011/12/thousands-enjoy-merry-christmas-in.html#comment-form' onclick=''> No comments: </a> </span> <span class='post-icons'> <span class='item-control blog-admin pid-1707683615'> <a href='https://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=7863791227391360541&from=pencil' title='Edit Post'> <img alt='' class='icon-action' height='18' src='https://resources.blogblog.com/img/icon18_edit_allbkg.gif' width='18'/> </a> </span> </span> <div class='post-share-buttons goog-inline-block'> <a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-email' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=7863791227391360541&target=email' target='_blank' title='Email This'><span class='share-button-link-text'>Email This</span></a><a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6683873946380235653&postID=7863791227391360541&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); Scott Walker, recall organizers have upped the ante.</p> <p>On Dec. 15, the same day Democratic Party Chair Mike Tate made the dramatic announcement that volunteers had gathered 507,533 signatures in just one month, state Democrats and United Wisconsin, the groups overseeing the recall effort, set a new goal of 720,277 signatures. That's 33% of the 2010 general election turnout, as opposed to the 25% required by law to launch a recall.</p> <p>But some activists say even that number is too low.</p> <p>"My advice was always to talk about 1 million -- to say, 'We are one million strong,'" says social media and technology consultant Bryan Bliss, who works with the activist group Wisconsin Wave. "All our internal projections show we are going to land with one million signatures by January. There's a lot more support than just barely enough to trigger this."</p> <p>Julie Wells, the forklift operator from Fort Atkinson who filed the papers that launched the recall drive, agrees. "We want that million," she says.</p> <p>"It's going really well," Wells says of the recall drive in Jefferson County, which gave Walker more than 60% of its votes in 2010. "We're kind of struggling right now with the number of volunteers. We need more. But our motivation has not flagged."</p> <p>That's despite what Wells describes as mounting hostility from the opposition, with yard signs disappearing and a lot of heckling of recall volunteers.</p> <p>"We've got old ladies sticking their tongues out, and giving us the finger," she says. "Guys drive by and yell at us. It really surprises me -- the ugliness of the other side."</p> <p>Nevertheless, Wells says, volunteers are ready for a new phase of signature gathering. In order to get across the finish line, they are planning to move from staking out public places to a more arduous door-to-door campaign.</p> <p>Tanya Lohr, a high school social studies teacher in West Bend who heads up the recall effort in Washington County, says volunteers in her area have also encountered hostility while collecting signatures. Lohr ran the ultimately unsuccessful recall drive against State Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) in what the state GOP website calls "the reddest county in the state" -- 75.5% of voters went for Walker there in 2010.</p> <p>One incident sparked the only felony charges so far in the state against someone for attempting to destroy recall petitions (by scribbling out names).</p> <p>"We have volunteers whose cars and houses were egged," Lohr says. "I think the resentment has turned violent because people were not prepared for the fact that in super-red Washington County, thousands of people would be lining up to sign recall petitions."</p> <p>The felony incident actually had a rallying effect, Lohr says. "We are getting more thumbs-up than thumbs-down lately. The screaming, etcetera, has gone down in the last week.</p> <p>"I've had people say they weren't going to sign a petition, but now they are signing because they don't want to be associated with that kind of behavior," Lohr adds. "I really think in the red counties it's a whole different ballgame."</p> <p>Just how different is hard to tell, however, from the available data.</p> <p>United Wisconsin has declined to release the numbers of signatures gathered in Washington and Jefferson counties. "But both counties are doing very well," insists the group's executive director, Meagan Mahaffey.</p> <p>In general, both United Wisconsin and the Democratic Party have kept a tight lid on the recall numbers.</p> <p>Rumors that they'd already hit their goal of 540,000 raced around the Internet in advance of Tate's announcement on Dec. 15, since there had been no update in almost three weeks.</p> <p>The information blackout did not sit well with Bliss of Wisconsin Wave, which is leading a parallel effort to collect signatures.</p> <p>"They didn't want to tell people, 'We're getting closer and we're almost there,' because they were worried people would slack off," says Bliss, who participates in weekly conference calls with United Wisconsin and other groups involved in the recall.</p> <p>"I expressed my disagreement with hiding the numbers," he says. "A lot of the grassroots support for recall is from people who are rebelling against the lack of accountability and transparency in the Walker administration."</p> <p>"People don't like that," he adds. "It's not a grassroots way to do things."</p> <p>Wisconsin Wave launched its own recall petition drive in the fall to attract volunteers who might object to the "top-down" strategy of United Wisconsin and the Democratic Party.</p> <p>Originally, Bliss says, organizers of the Wisconsin Wave recall petition drive were motivated by concerns that the Democrats might abandon the recall effort if they thought they might fall short of the target number.</p> <p>Now that the official recall is going so well, that's not really a concern anymore. Any signatures Wisconsin Wave gathers can be added to the total that United Wisconsin and the grassroots groups it is working with submit to the Government Accountability Board.</p> <p>Just as Tate was announcing that the recall had crossed the half-million mark on Dec. 15, United Wisconsin released signature totals from five counties from all corners of the state to show, as Mahaffey puts it, "this is not just a Dane County and Milwaukee County phenomenon."</p> <p>These include:</p> <p>8,007 signatures, or 128% of Walker's total vote in Douglas County.<br />22,365 signatures, or 124% of Walker's total vote in Eau Claire County.<br />21,558 signatures, or 91% of Walker' total vote in Rock County.<br />7,375 signatures, or 84% of Walker's total vote in Oneida County.<br />6,972 signatures, or 81% of Walker's total vote in Grant County.</p> <p>The first three are closely divided counties that went Democratic by small margins in the 2010 governor's race. The last two lean Republican. Oneida County, in the far northern part of the state, voted for Walker by more than 10 percentage points in 2010. In Grant County, on the Western border, Walker won by less than 10% of the vote.</p> <p>"From Superior to Beloit to La Crosse to Milwaukee and all points in between, the people of Wisconsin are rising up," Tate said at his press conference.</p> <p>"We have no doubt the Democrats are rallying their left-wing base around their blatant power grab for the governor's mansion," responded Ben Sparks, Republican Party of Wisconsin communications director in an email statement last week. "The simple truth is that Gov. Walker was elected by an overwhelming majority of Wisconsin voters who were tired of the Democrats' job-killing agenda, and they have zero desire to go back to the failed policies of the past."</p> <p>In his press conference, Tate pointed out a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that shows Wisconsin leads the nation in job losses, even as the governor justifies cuts to schools and social service programs as part of a job-creating strategy. Walker is "kicking more than 65,000 families off health care coverage just in time for Christmas," he added.</p> <p>"The people of Wisconsin have said enough is enough," Tate declared.</p> <p>Other groups that are circulating their own petitions -- and targeting voters who might not generally vote Democratic -- include the Sierra Club, which is turning in its petitions to United Wisconsin.</p> <p>"The reason we decided to endorse the recall when the other environmental organizations did not is that we want to make sure people recognize that the recall isn't just about collective bargaining," says Elizabeth Ward, Conservation Programs coordinator for the Sierra Club. "We wouldn't have endorsed it if that were the only issue. It's not just about workers' rights."</p> <p>Sierra Club volunteers are gathering hundreds of signatures, Ward says. "The Great Dying was the biggest of all the mass extinctions," said study researcher Darcy Ogden of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. "Estimates suggest up to 96 percent of all marine species and 70 percent of all land species were lost."</p> <p> Researchers still debate the cause of this mass-extinction event, implicating everything from asteroids to volcanic eruptions to a decrease of the oxygen in the atmosphere.</p> <p> <strong>Coal combustion</strong></p> <p> Studies earlier this year found evidence of a compound called fly ash, one of the products of coal combustion, in rocks laid down right before this extinction event. The finding suggested a large amount of coal had combusted over a period of tens to thousands of years.</p> <p> The researchers already knew a series of volcanic eruptions, which gave rise to a region of volcanic rock called the Siberian Traps, occurred around this time and covered up to 2.7 million square miles (7 million square kilometers) in lava. These lava floods, made of molten basalt rock, could have taken out the animals and plants directly in their paths. To have any global impact, however, the volcanic eruptions also would have needed to send airborne ash, soot and gases high into the atmosphere, the researchers noted.</p> <p> Coal also seems to have been present in the area of the Siberian Traps, and the researchers thought that perhaps the lava burned up a large amount of coal and left the fly ash ? but they weren't sure whether it was physically possible. They ran computer simulations of these processes and found evidence that a coal explosion could have been the cause of worldwide climate change and the Great Dying.</p> <p> <strong>Explosive extinction</strong></p> <p> These basalt floods could have mixed with the coal underground, then migrated up to the surface, where the mixture explosively lighted on fire when it mixed with oxygen in the air. [Image Gallery: Wild Volcanoes]</p> <p> A blast that powerful "requires a very large amount of basalt to erupt over the surface in one place, and this place has to have large coal beds," Ogden said. "The Siberian Traps are a great candidate for this, since they are one of the biggest volcanic events in history and there is evidence to support the presence of coal in that region."</p> <p> When this basalt-coal mixture reached the surface, it could have led to an explosive, fiery reaction similar to the giant oil fires set off by Iraqi forces in Kuwait in 1991. Volcanic emissions from the explosion would include carbon dioxide and methane, greenhouse gases that trap heat on Earth.</p> <p> "The coal-basalt mixture comes out of the ground as a fluid, like oil, then ignites and combusts upon contact with the oxygen in the air," Odgen said. "The resulting soot, fly ash and gases are driven into the atmosphere in a large, dirty plume."</p> <p> The study was published Dec. 19 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.</p> <p> <em>You can follow LiveScience staff writer Jennifer Welsh on Twitter @</em><em>microbelover</em><em>.
