Phone guys running GM need to be ... - Automotive Digest

Situation: I don?t know about you, but something really ?smells? about the way that Akerson and the General Motors gang of old line thinkers got rid of Joel Ewanick.

What sounds bogus? ?The excuse or reason that GM gave for letting Ewanick go. ?He made a bad advertising deal with the Manchester England soccer team? ?Come on, with dozens of corporate attorneys in the back office reviewing everything every day, if for no other reason than to create work and justify their high level comp? ?This is NOT the real reason.

Ackerson himself had to be aware of all that goes on with his direct reports? ?Get serious. ?Why isn?t the media coming the aid and resurgence of new ideas in automotive marketing other than maybe the Detroit Bureau team?

How to know how badly GM is being lead? ?You can ?get? a sense of the real reason. ?Ewanick was sacked by reading and listening to the brilliant Paul Eisenstein, one the best automotive journalists in the country. To really ?get? some understanding of what is going on inside GM or at least a taste of it ? read Paul Eisenstein?s Detroit Bureau assessment this week. Go there now and see what I mean.

Read and be outraged: ?When you read and ingest what Paul has so articulately related, ?one has to somehow realize that bringing in a bunch of telecommunications guys to run a car company is not going to work over time. ?It really makes you almost angry, disappointed and confounded ? and you want to yell at all of the GM team for not having the guts to stand behind Joel Ewanick and people like him. ?Bob Lutz tried to move this entrenched mentality and the spirit of DeLorean is still there some place under a conference table.

What will happen now? ?GM is not going to improve their market share or establish the brand the way it could have been. They should recruit Facebook, Microsoft or Zynga executives to create new marketing teams and a new start. Instead they probably will stay with another ?car guy? for MSU or Michigan or Bowling Green. ?Ho hum.

Let ?em go bankrupt? ?Some days, one might conclude that we should NOT have bailed out GM. ?With moves like forcing a creative, game changing marketing executive like Joel Ewanick out, they are just going to gradually move back ?into a state of incompetency with no vision or sense of their own insularity and old line thinking.Which is what has harmed this once great company. ?Maybe it was the entrenched car guy mentality that should have gone ?bankrupt? ? maybe that was what ultimately caused the financial bankruptcy? ?The wrong people are leaving GM and the right people are not there yet.
