For the past few years, one of the biggest challenges for schools has not been in the classroom. Instead, it has been making sure kids have healthy diets at school to cut down on obesity.
One change is making a difference.
Several states across the country have cut back on sugary or fattening foods, including Virginia. That means kids have kept off an average of two pounds.
Food Services Director Gerald Lehman has worked with Rockingham County?s schools for years and he has seen school menus change.
?Many years ago we reduced fat,? said Lehman. ?We?ve been reducing saturated fat and total calories.?
Those changes may have helped slow childhood obesity. Kids, who live in states with laws that limit junk food sales, have kept the weight off.
Rockingham County?s schools will change its menu again this year to emphasize more fruits and vegetables.
?We?re hoping students will see those, select those and consume those and hopefully consume a few less of the things that have maybe been contributing toward the obesity issues.?
Harrisonburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Kizner said having the right foods on their plates can make students better learners.
