DIY Bamboo Options for Your Patio - Erie Construction Better Home ...

Summer is here and with it comes a myriad of reasons to try and spend as much time as possible outdoors. With long sunny days and warm nights, it is the perfect time to not only relish the time outdoors in your backyard but also a perfect time to tackle outdoor home improvements on your to-do list and DIY projects for your patio and garden.

As more people move to adopt a more eco-conscious lifestyle, the home and backyard environment is also one of the best places to begin the transition to a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. It is easier than ever to purchase green products and materials for home improvement that reduce the carbon footprint of the home substantially. At the heart of this trend in green living is bamboo, which is one of the most environmentally friendly raw materials on the planet. Not only is bamboo sustainable, renewable, extremely durable and anti-fungal but It is also extremely versatile and can be made into everything from clothing to floors.

Using bamboo for your summer patio projects is a great way to adopt a green environment. These bamboo options for your patio are a great, and pretty easy, place to start.

Bamboo Patio Floors

Bamboo is naturally moisture resistant, adaptable, durable and able to withstand harsh elements better than other flooring options. With hardwood trees vanishing by the day, instead of building a new patio out of wood, make your own bamboo patio a fun weekend project for your backyard. The installation of bamboo floors and patios is virtually the same as hardwood flooring and yet is much higher in quality and environmentally friendly.

Bamboo Sheet Sets and Linens

When spun into thread, bamboo can be woven into fabric finer than silk and softer than the most expensive cashmere making it one of the highest quality fabrics available. Because of its softness and naturally breathable and moisture resistant qualities, bamboo fabric made into sheets and linens are becoming a common integration with outdoor furniture and accessories. Blankets and linens, decorative rugs, pillows and bamboo sheets for cushions are all items that can be made from bamboo fabric and added to a backyard patio to give it a more inviting and homey feel.

Bamboo Patio Furniture

Bamboo?s tensile strength, the measurement of its ability to withstand pressure, is stronger than even steal. This coupled with its moisture resistant properties and naturally smooth exterior make bamboo furniture a popular choice for backyards and gardens. Patio chairs and benches that are made from bamboo are extremely comfortable, durable enough to last through harsh weather and constant use, and hold naturally symmetrical patterns and beautiful textures that suit every style and taste.

Bamboo Gardens

There are so many reasons growing your own bamboo garden is a good thing it could take up an entirely new article to list them all. For starters, not only is it green to grow bamboo, it can actually help the environment and assist in reversing global warming and climate change. The reason being, bamboo actually absorbs more carbon monoxide gases and produces up to 35% more oxygen than hardwood. Bamboo is also extremely easy to grow in almost any climate, naturally repels insects, matures quickly and introduces an extreme natural beauty to a patio garden.

U.S. soldier accused of leading militia plot was suspect in wife's death

(Reuters) - The U.S. Army private accused of being the ringleader of an anti-government militia in Georgia was a suspect in the death of his wife months before prosecutors say he and three fellow soldiers murdered two people to keep their clandestine group secret, authorities said.

Isaac Aguigui funded the anarchist militia FEAR, or Forever Enduring Always Ready, with up to $500,000 in life insurance benefits he collected after his wife's death in July 2011, prosecutors said.

Aguigui and three other soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart in southeastern Georgia near Savannah have since been charged with murder and other offenses stemming from the December 5, 2011, shooting deaths of a former soldier and his teenage girlfriend.

Aguigui, 19, and two others were scheduled to appear in court in Long County, Georgia, for a hearing on Thursday. A third co-defendant reached a plea deal with prosecutors on Monday.

The accused militia members had plotted to assassinate President Barack Obama and to attack their Army base and a dam in Aguigui's home state of Washington, Assistant County District Attorney Isabel Pauley said during those proceedings.

They also discussed poisoning the apple crop in Washington state and had purchased $87,000 worth of weapons to carry out their planned attacks, she said.

Prosecutors said the group crossed the line from conspiracy to actual violence when they killed Michael Roark, 19, and Tiffany York, 17, whose bodies were found in a wooded area near the base, in a bid to keep them from exposing the militia.

One of the four accused killers, Private First-Class Michael Burnett, pleaded guilty on Monday to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and agreed to testify against his three co-defendants.

As part of the plea deal, he would be spared the death penalty so long as he cooperates.

WIFE'S SUSPICIOUS DEATH

Months before the two slayings in December, military authorities were investigating Aguigui's role in the death of his wife, also a soldier at Fort Stewart, according to Sergeant John Kruse of the police department in Wenatchee, near Aguigui's northwest Washington hometown of Cashmere.

Kruse told Reuters on Wednesday he inquired about Aguigui with the Army Criminal Investigation Command when a member of Aguigui's family approached the police sergeant with concerns she had about her relative. At the time, Kruse said, Aguigui was on leave from the Army and visiting his old neighborhood.

In addition to confirming the relative's claims that Aguigui was under investigation in connection with the suspicious death of his wife, Kruse said he also confirmed with a local gun merchant that Aguigui had recently purchased 15 firearms, several of them semiautomatic rifles.

Kruse said he informed the FBI about his findings and that Aguigui was interviewed by FBI agents before he returned to Fort Stewart.

Army Criminal Investigation Command spokesman Chris Grey said the agency has an ongoing investigation against Aguigui but declined to comment further. The FBI declined comment.

Pauley, the Long County prosecutor, also has said the death of Aguigui's wife, Deirdre Wetzker Aguigui, was regarded as suspicious. None of the authorities Reuters contacted revealed any of the circumstances known about her death.

She was 24 years old and five months pregnant when she died in July 2011, said her father, Alma Wetzker, reached by telephone at his home in Minnesota. He declined to speculate about his daughter's death while it was under investigation.

He said the couple met at the U.S. Military Preparatory Academy in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

"Isaac is a natural leader and he has tremendous capacity to do whatever he wants to accomplish," Wetzker said, adding that his daughter "never would have gone along with what they're accusing Isaac of."

His late daughter was an Arab-language linguist for the Army who had served in Iraq and was promoted to the rank of sergeant shortly before her death, he said.

WePay Launches Buttons To Allow Any Site To Accept In-Line Payments With Just A Line Of Code

wepay_logoOnline payments startup WePay has been on a roll lately. The company is processing hundreds of millions of dollars in payments annually, and adding more than 1,000 active merchants per week. But it wants to accelerate that growth even further, by rolling out payment buttons that will allow anyone to add in-line payments to their sites with just a single line of code. WePay is a Y Combinator-backed startup originally formed mostly to make it easier for groups to collect money and make payments together. But it's recently gone beyond just helping out groups, providing an ultra-simple platform for anyone to collect and manage payments online. It's added support for event registration and ticketing, custom invoicing, donations, and e-commerce. A few weeks ago, it even rolled out a white-label payments API and lowered its prices to court third-party developers and better compete against PayPal and others

Federal court rejects Texas voter ID law

Pat Sullivan / AP

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told the NAACP annual convention on July 10 in Houston that he opposes a new photo ID requirement in Texas elections because it would be harmful to minority voters.

By NBC News staff and news services

A federal court in Washington on Thursday blocked a Texas law that would require voters to present photo IDs to election officials before being allowed to cast ballots in November, saying it would place an unfair burden on minorities and the poor.

A three-judge U.S. District Court panel ruled that that SB 14, described as the most stringent voter ID law in the country, imposes "strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor" and noted that racial minorities in Texas are more likely to live in poverty.

?Texas, seeking to implement its voter ID law, bears the burden of proof and must therefore show that SB 14 lacks retrogressive effect. But as we have found, everything Texas has submitted as affirmative evidence is unpersuasive, invalid, or both,? the opinion said.

?Moreover, uncontested record evidence conclusively shows that the implicit costs of obtaining SB 14-qualifying ID will fall most heavily on the poor and that a disproportionately high percentage of African Americans and Hispanics in Texas live in poverty. We therefore conclude that SB 14 is likely to lead to ?retrogression in the position of racial minorities with respect to their effective exercise of the electoral franchise.??

Read the court opinion (.PDF)

The ruling was the second legal blow to Texas this week. On Tuesday, another federal court panel threw out a Texas redistricting plan, finding evidence of discrimination in voting maps drawn by the state's Republican-controlled Legislature.

The decision on the voter ID law involves an increasingly contentious political issue: a push, largely by Republican-controlled legislatures and governor's offices to impose strict identification requirements on voters.

Republicans are aggressively seeking the requirements in the name of stamping out voter fraud. Democrats, with support from a number of studies, say that fraud at the polls is largely non-existent and that Republicans are simply trying to disenfranchise minorities, poor people and college students -- all groups that tend to back Democrats.

Who can vote?: Special series on voter ID issues

The ruling comes in the same week that South Carolina's strict photo ID law is on trial in front of another three-judge panel in the same federal courthouse. A court ruling in the South Carolina case is expected in time for the November election.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed SB 14 into law on May 27, 2011. The law has yet to take effect because the state needs ?preclearance? for any change in voting procedures from either the U.S. attorney general or a three-judge U.S. District Court panel.

The judges said such voter ID laws might well be approved if they ensure that all prospective voters can easily obtain free photo IDs, and that any underlying documents required to obtain that ID are truly free of charge.

But the judges noted the Texas Legislature tabled or defeated amendments that would have, among other things, waived all fees for indigent persons who needed the underlying ?documents and reimbursed poor people for ID-related travel costs.

In the Texas case, the Justice Department called several lawmakers, all of them Democrats, who said they detected a clear racial motive in the push for the voter ID law. Lawyers for Texas argued that the state was simply tightening its laws. Texas called experts who demonstrated that voter ID laws had a minimal effect on turnout. Republican lawmakers testified that the legislation was the result of a popular demand for more election protections.

During an appearance in Houston in July, Attorney General Eric Holder said Texas' photo ID requirement amounts to a poll tax, a term that harkens back to the days after Civil War Reconstruction when blacks across the South were stripped of their right to vote. The attorney general told the NAACP that many Texas voters seeking to cast ballots would struggle to pay for the documents they might need to obtain the required photo ID.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said the state will appeal the panel's rejection to the U.S. Supreme Court.

?The Supreme Court of the United States has already upheld voter ID laws as a constitutional method of ensuring integrity at the ballot box,? he said in a statement. ?Today's decision is wrong on the law and improperly prevents Texas from implementing the same type of ballot integrity safeguards that are employed by Georgia and Indiana - and were upheld by the Supreme Court. The State will appeal this decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, where we are confident we will prevail."

7 Steps to Instantly Better Writing
I?m worried. The publishing revolution is relentlessly moving forward. Everyone?s a publisher now, or can be. Are we witnessing the democratization of art and commerce, or ? as Andrew Keen puts it ? are we simply devolving into a meaningless cacophony of text? The only way through, to something meaningful, is mastery. Are you a great, persuasive writer who takes her craft seriously? Or are you only after more and more empty pageviews, at any cost? Ms. Jaksch offers a useful (starting) list for those of you seeking the former path.

//

How To Accomplish More By Doing Less
What if more hours at the desk do not necessarily equate to more (and better) work? If you?re creating original content to benefit and grow your business, the answer is obvious ? ?It?s not just the number of hours we sit at a desk that determines the value we generate.? This idea keeps coming up again and again, for good reason. Mr. Schwartz lays out the argument for less, as well as an encouraging, specific example of it playing out in his own professional life.

//

33 Questions to Ask Before Hitting ?Publish?
We all know that anything published to the Internet is published to the Internet ? forever. If you don?t yet know that little fact, well, now is a great time to start thinking twice about what you?re putting on Facebook, et al. In the context of creating serious content to build an audience, we find ourselves in a more subtle situation. Things like relevance, grammar, clarity, law, and formatting come into play. Commercially speaking, these elements are vital to a content plan that works. Allow Ms. Jones to take you through this 33-point content checklist, and allow yourself to absorb it, putting it to use every time you hit that publish button.

//

The Future of Storytelling
I utterly disagree with Mr. Ifeanyi that stories will/must evolve. He knows as well as I do that storytelling is an ancient art, the basic structure of which was established thousands of years ago, and will remain for thousands more. Performance and political ?artists? need not apply. Of course, the platforms on which our stories are told are obviously evolving, which is where I find the value in this article. Keep your eyes open. Watch. If an emerging platform can be useful to your goals, think deeply about how you can use it to tell your story. One good example of this is how Steve Martin is using Twitter and Facebook. He?s remade his act for the digital medium, embracing it, using entirely new platforms to tell the stories he?s always told.

How to Be a Better Procrastinator
Four bits of unconventional advice for those procrastinators who?ve given up hope. According to Mr. Perry, there is hope, and it can appear the moment you stop trying to stop procrastinating. Oh yes, my friends, you read that correctly.

Charles Bukowski on Committment to Your Craft
In honor of what would have been Mr. Bukowski?s 92nd birthday recently, a short passage from his novel Factotum. If you?ve ever questioned your calling as a writer, your calling to this bitch of a craft, soak this one in. You may disagree with the particulars of his directive, but I doubt you can dismiss the principle. Carry on.

Hurricane Isaac makes landfall in Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Hurricane Isaac made landfall in southern Louisiana on Tuesday, bringing high winds, soaking rains and storm surges that will pose the first major test for New Orleans' multibillion-dollar flood protections put in place after Katrina devastated the U.S. Gulf Coast seven years ago.

Isaac's storm surge poses a major test of the so-called Crescent City's new flood-control systems and reinforced levees that failed in 2005, leaving parts of the city underwater. Forecasts from the U.S. National Hurricane Center showed the storm coming ashore in the Mississippi Delta late on Tuesday, possibly taking direct aim at New Orleans.

"Many parts of the state could see 24 to 38 hours of tropical storm-force winds," Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal told a news conference earlier. "We're going to see a lot of downed trees and power lines," he said. "We need people to stay safe."

Storm surge flooding is already occurring in coastal areas of southeastern Louisiana, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.

Earlier, the Army Corps of Engineers closed for the first time the massive new floodgate on the largest storm-surge barrier in the world, at Lake Borgne, east of New Orleans.

In other preparations, oil production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico nearly ground to a halt, and ports and coastal refineries curtailed operations as Isaac approached.

At 6 p.m. CDT (2300 GMT), the Hurricane Center said Isaac was centered about 95 miles southeast of New Orleans with top sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

The storm was traveling at a relatively slow 8 mph. That pace is a concern for people in its path since slow-moving cyclones can bring higher rainfall totals.

Isaac was about 370 miles wide. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center of the storm.

Heavy rains and big storm surges were also forecast for parts of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

After Katrina, the Corps of Engineers built a $14.5 billion flood defense system of walls, floodgates, levees and pumps designed to protect the city against a massive tidal surge like the one that swamped New Orleans in Katrina's wake.

Isaac had New Orleans in its sights as the city is still recovering from Katrina, which swept across it on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Want To Lose Weight ...

US researchers working on a study comparing approaches to weight loss,
found that keeping a food diary can double weight loss as part of a
managed programme; they said that the more food records
they kept, the more weight the participants lost.

The study was carried out by investigators from Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research, and is to be published in the August issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The study is one of the largest and longest running weight loss maintenance trials ever conducted, wrote the researchers in a press statement, and is also unique in that a large number of participants (44 per cent) were African Americans who are known to have higher risks for diseases that are made worse by being overweight, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Those who kept regular and frequent food records tended to lose more weight, said lead author Dr Jack Hollis, a researcher at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon, adding that:

"Those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. It seems that the simple act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume fewer calories."

The trial, known as the Weight Loss Maintenance (WLM) trial, was a a randomized trial conducted at four centers to compare different approaches to maintaining weight loss over a period of 30 months. The August paper describes the results from Phase I, the first 6 months of the trial.

1,685 overweight or obese (Body Mass Index or BMI in range 25 to 45 kg/m2) participants aged 25 and over and who were taking blood pressure and/or antidyslipidemia medication (eg cholesterol busters) took part in 20 weekly group sessions to encourage them to restrict their calorie intake, take part in daily moderate to intense physical exercise for half an hour a day, and modify their diet according to the DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) guidelines. The participants were also encouraged to keep daily records of their calorie intake.

After six months, the results showed that:

  • 44 per cent of the participants were African American, 67 per cent were women, and 79 per cent were obese (BMI of 30 or more).

  • 87 per cent were taking blood pressure medication and 38 per cent antidyslipidemia medication (eg cholesterol busters).

  • An average of 72 per cent of the participants attended 20 group sessions.

  • The average reported amount of time spent in moderate to intense physical exercise was 117 minutes a week (nearly 2 hours).

  • On average the participants kept 3.7 daily food records a week, and consumed 2.9 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.

  • The average weight loss among all the participants was about 13 pounds (5.9 kilos).

  • More than two-thirds (69 per cent) of them lost at least 9 pounds (4.1 kilos).

  • This was enough to reduce health risks and qualify them for Phase II, which lasted 30 months and tested different approaches to maintaining the weight loss.

  • All race and gender subgroups lost significant amounts of weight.

  • Among African Americans, the average weight loss among men was 11.9 pounds (5.4 kilos) and among women it was 9 pounds (4.1 kilos).

  • Among non-African Americans, the average weight loss among men was 18.7 pounds (8.5 kilos) and among women it was 12.8 pounds (5.8 kilos).

  • Behaviour such as diet records and physical activity accounted for most of the variation in weight loss, although these links differed by race and gender.
The authors concluded that the weight loss programme:

"Successfully achieved clinically significant short-term weight loss in a diverse population of high-risk patients."

More than two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, said co-author and Kaiser Permanente researcher, Dr Victor Stevens.

"If we all lost just nine pounds, like the majority of people in this study did, our nation would see vast decreases in hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke," he added.

In an earlier study, Stevens found that even a 5 pound (2.3 kilos) loss of weight was enough to reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure by 20 per cent.

The Weight Management Initiative from Kaiser Permanente's Care Management Institute has been recommending food journals as part of weight loss maintenance since 2002. The Initiative brings together clinicians, researchers, insurers, and policymakers to work out effective and practical, non-surgical ways to prevent and treat overweight and obesity.

Dr Keith Bachman, a member of the Weight Management Initiative, said that the food diary doesn't have to be a formal thing:

"Just the act of scribbling down what you eat on a Post-It note, sending yourself e-mails tallying each meal, or sending yourself a text message will suffice."

He said the value was the fact that writing it down makes you reflect on what you are eating, which makes us more aware of our habits and gives us a better chance that we will change our behaviour.

"Every day I hear patients say they can't lose weight," said Bachman, but "this study shows that most people can lose weight if they have the right tools and support".

"And food journaling in conjunction with a weight management program or class is the ideal combination of tools and support," he added.

"Weight Loss During the Intensive Intervention Phase of the Weight-Loss Maintenance Trial."

Aspirin and Cancer: It May Help With Prostate, Not With Breast ? AARP

Personal Health Print

Two new studies, published Monday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, offer contrasting news about aspirin?s potential role in cancer prevention and treatment.

Men who were being treated for prostate cancer and were taking aspirin for other medical conditions were less likely to die of their cancer than were men who were not taking aspirin, The New York Times reports.

On the other hand, taking aspirin did not appear to protect postmenopausal women from developing breast cancer, according to Health Day news.

Previous research, some of it by the Harvard researchers involved in this breast cancer study, has shown that aspirin may help lower the risk of developing colon cancer.

There were big differences between the two new studies, explained Stanley Liauw, M.D., author of the prostate cancer study and an associate professor?at the University of Chicago Medical Center?s Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology.

The breast cancer study looked at how aspirin might prevent a new cancer from occurring, while the prostate study examined how aspirin might keep an established cancer from getting worse.

Liauw also told Health Day that the different sites in the body where the two cancers occur may play a role in why aspirin had a dramatic effect with one but not the other.

In the prostate study, 6,000 men who had undergone either surgery or radiation therapy were followed for 10 years. About 37 percent of the men were already taking some type of anticoagulant, such as aspirin, warfarin or Plavix, when the study began.

Liauw and his team showed that those who were taking aspirin had a 57 percent reduction in the risk of death from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer that occurs in men.

Keep in mind, though, that this was not a randomized, controlled trial ? considered the gold standard in clinical research. No dosage information was collected, so researchers cannot say exactly how much aspirin was most beneficial.

But researchers found that the prostate cancer death rate for those taking aspirin was 3 percent, compared with 8 percent for those who did not, The New York Times reported. Also, the aspirin users were significantly less likely to experience a recurrence of prostate cancer or have the disease spread to the bones, the study found.

In the breast cancer study, researchers led by Xuehong Zhang, M.D., an instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Boston, tracked nearly 85,000 postmenopausal women, all of whom were working as registered nurses when the study began.

About every two years, the women completed questionnaires regarding their medical histories and lifestyle, including their routine use of aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), like acetaminophen.

Over 30 years, more than 4,700 of the women developed some form of invasive breast cancer. Nonetheless, Zhang?s team wrote that use of aspirin or other NSAIDs did not have any significant impact on lowering either overall breast cancer risk or the risk for a specific subtype, like receptor 2 positive.

Health experts, however, caution that older adults should not begin taking aspirin without first consulting their doctor.

While many Americans use low-dose aspirin to reduce their risk of heart disease, taking aspirin regularly increases the risk for gastrointestinal bleeding and stroke.

In other health news:

Midlife fitness may pay off in later years. The Washington Post reports that those who were most fit in their 30s, 40s and 50s had a lighter load of chronic health conditions such as congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer?s disease, and colon and lung cancers in their later years ? specifically, in this study, after age 65.

Pot-smoking teens face mental slippage as adults. A new study reported in the Los Angeles Times finds that adults who smoked marijuana early and often in life face a higher likelihood of sheering off IQ points and performing more poorly on tests of reasoning, attention and memory as they approach age 40, when compared with those who smoked pot less often.

OtterBox Defender Series case review - multi-layer protection and a locking holster clip

The OtterBox Defender Series case for the HTC One X offers three solid layers of protection in a tight, compact package. Beyond the usual hard plastic/silicone skin hybrid set-up, there’s also a screen protector integrated with the inner case. This means no more futzing around with sticky screen protectors, and having to line things up perfectly or squeezing out air bubbles. The case comes with a clip-style holsters that rotates a full 360 degrees while keeping your phone securely in place - face-up or face-down, whatever works for you.

Panda preferences influence trees used for scent marking

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? As solitary animals, giant pandas have developed a number of ways to communicate those times when they are ready to come into close contact. One means of this communication occurs through scent marking. A recent study by San Diego Zoo Global researchers, collaborating with researchers at the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Science, indicates that pandas make clear and specific choices about what trees are used for scent marking.

"Variables affecting the selection of scent-marking sites included bark roughnesss, presence of moss on the tree trunk, tree diameter and distance to the trail," said Ron Swaisgood, Ph.D., co-head of San Diego Zoo Global's Giant Panda Conservation Unit.

"These choices have clear effects on the scent signal, making it last longer, be detected from further away, or otherwise enhance its communication efficiency. We are not surprised that pandas are efficient with their use of chemo-signals, as mounting evidence suggests that many aspects of giant panda life history are constrained by their energetically poor diet."

This study, which was recently published in Animal Behavior, confirms that old-growth forest and other factors like tree type are important for maintaining habitat that will support giant panda conservation.

Why the Website Sher Valenzuela Didn't Build May Haunt the GOP

Sher Valenzuela is basically embodies everything the Republican party wants from its "We Built This" narrative: She's a small business-owning Latina running for office in Delaware. The only problem is, her company has taken some $17 million in federal loans and contracts and Reddit is all over it.?First off, Valenzuela's company is called First State Manufacturing, but, as Reddit user FirstStateMan figured out,?Valenzuela did not register firststatemanufacturing.com --so he "built" it for her. And this may be where those loans and contracts come to haunt Valenzuela and the Republican National Convention, where she's scheduled to speak Tuesday. As the left-leaning?Media Matters reported on August 23, Valenzuela and her manufacturing company received more than $2 million in federal loans and more than $15 million in federal contracts over the years--which severely?undercuts the "We Built This" theme that Republican are running with?for the convention. ?

RELATED: Obama Impersonator Says He Wasn't Pulled Early Over Race Jokes

And this is where FirstStateMan's dummy site comes into play. Currently it's?being bombarded with tons of hits,?which makes it harder to load. But he has outlined a year-by-year timeline of the federal aid and technical help that Valenzuela received since 1997. Highlights include:

1998

"With?help from SBA resource partners SCORE and the Small Business Technology and Development Center?the [we] composed a business plan and opened First State Manufacturing in their garage with an old but reliable sewing machine named 'Betsy.'"

We received an?SBA $20,000 Express loan to rent a 2,000 sq. ft. space in a warehouse so we could expand outside of our garage.

...

1999

Earned larger contracts with assistance from local?Procurement Technical Assistance Center?(PTAC)

...

2002

We got two loans from the SBA in 2002!

The SBA gave us a?$96,000 loan?7(A)?to modernize and?expand our inventory.

The 9/11 tragedy challenged our very existence. The SBA gave us a $65,800 Disaster loan to maintain our business and employees.?

Using taxpayer funding to help your small business, isn't embarrassing by any means. But it is damning if you're going to tell everyone at the convention and on television how you did it "on your own" and champion the GOP "We built this" talking point thatObama's administration doesn't care about small business owners. It also can't help when there's a dummy site out there with a Google bomb-friendly Web address for your business. (Valenzuela's actual site firststatemfg.com.) We still don't know if this hypocrisy is enough to bump Valenzuela off the schedule (she's still on for Tuesday sometime after 9:00 p.m. EDT), but if it does, Ms. Valenzuela can thank Reddit.

US officials checking SEAL raid book for secrets

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. officials said Monday that they are reviewing a copy of a soon-to-be-published account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, checking for leaks of classified information.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said Defense Department officials "received the manuscript and we are looking at it."

CIA spokesman Preston Golson would only say that "the CIA has a copy of the book."

The book, "No Easy Day," is scheduled for publication on Sept. 11.

The author, a former Navy SEAL who participated in the raid, did not submit the book for pre-publication review that is required by the military secrecy agreements officials say he signed.

Pentagon regulations stipulate that retired personnel, former employees and non-active duty members of the Reserves "shall use the DoD security review process to ensure that information they submit for public release does not compromise national security."

Pentagon officials say that if they determine the manuscript reveals classified information about the raid, the Pentagon would "defer to the Department of Justice."

If there is classified information in the book, the former SEAL could face criminal charges.

The publisher says the author intends to give the "majority" of the proceeds to charity, but the Justice Department could still sue to collect any future book proceeds as well.

A special operations advocacy group, Special Operations-OPSEC, which is criticizing President Barack Obama over alleged leaks and making the raid the national security centerpiece of his re-election campaign, asked the attorney general to block the book's release until the government can make sure it reveals no classified information.

In a letter released to The Associated Press, the group asked the Justice Department "to immediately seek...an injunction in federal court to prevent this book from being published and distributed" until it can be reviewed.

Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd says the department is reviewing the letter.

Dutton announced the book's pending release last week, saying that "No Easy Day" will "set the record straight" on the bin Laden operation.

After the initial burst of publicity, the book shot up to the top of the Amazon.com chart, reaching No. 1 as of late Friday morning and remaining there Monday, displacing the million-selling erotic trilogy "Fifty Shades of Gray."

The economics of Linden and electricity rates - Stabroek News ...

Conclusion

Introduction

As this column evolved over the past month its focus moved beyond Linden and electricity to the whole of Region 10 of which Linden can be considered the capital. The column which concludes today was in response to developments in that region in which the drastic hike in electricity rates led to protests, deaths and what will soon come to be known as the Region 10 Agreement. That agreement, signed by the Chairman of Region 10, Sharma Solomon, and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds on behalf of the Government of Guyana provides for a Technical Team specifically to look at the question of electricity; an Economic Committee to address the economic conditions in the region, a Commission of Inquiry to look into the events of July 18 in which three persons were killed; the establishment of a Region 10 Land Selection Committee to look at investments and land development in Linden and Region 10; and for the transfer to the regional administration of the television dish and transmitter and the granting of a television licence to the region.
The agreement provides for the naming of the Economic Committee by Tuesday of this coming week and for it to submit its final report ?within ninety days.? While the members of the Technical Committee have been named ?..

Remembering The Late Tony Scott, Director Of 'Top Gun,' 'True ...

Tony Scott

We at Geeks of Doom and everyone around the cinema community and the globe are still stunned by the news last week that film director Tony Scott, responsible for so many of the fun, in your face action films of the 1980s and beyond, jumped to his death off of a bridge at the age of 68.

Certainly this is a story that no one anticipated coming, and for sure there will be question marks that will go unanswered forever. Why this vibrant, talented, vivid, energetic and colorful individual would commit such an act is harrowing, tragic, and ultimately extremely sad (there is speculation about this health, but no official word yet). Klieg lights have been snuffed in Hollywood metaphorically from this event, and the legacy of Tony Scott will always endure and hopefully shine even brighter than it did when he was with us.

In memoriam of the man, it?s very, very easy to be forgiving and forgetful when an artist like Scott passes away, and in the quick emotional haze of these kind of events, it?s very easy to suddenly give the deceased artist a free pass of his entire body of work. But, in all fairness and honesty, and that?s the only way this reporter can give it to you folks, there?s no denying that the body of cinematic work that Tony Scott produced in his lifetime were equally loved, hated, critically panned, enjoyed by movie goers and critics, they sported huge box office returns, they sported huge box office failures, this kind of list can go on and on.

It also must be noted that Scott had sometimes existed in the shadow of his older brother Ridley, who while he may not have ever directed the kind of blockbusters that younger Scott had sometimes the propensity to do so, Ridley had gone on to direct some of the most critically lauded films in recent memory. Tony was like the more looser of the two, the McCartney to Ridley?s Lennon, and thus, the result of Tony Scott?s output of work was more fun, looser, required one to think less, enjoy more, feel more primal and delight more aurally and visually at his output. Tony Scott?s directorial style was a hammer, in your face attack of the senses at once, sometimes there was no room to breathe, with characterizations that some might regard as hollow, spouting fun lines while mired in superlative clich?s, but make no mistake, Tony Scott always, ALWAYS, threw a fun cinematic party for his audience. And if you went along with that ride, a fun time would indeed be had by all.

So here?s a breakdown of some of the highlights (and to some, possibly the lowlights) of Tony Scott?s career (in chronological order):

The Hunger

1) The Hunger (1983): Scott?s debut made some controversial noise when first released, and it?s pretty much a fun vampire yarn about as far and adult from anything Stephanie Hardwicke could ever muster up. Susan Sarandon is embroiled in a love triangle with blood thirsty creatures of the night David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve. Full of the Scott style right away, counterpointed by bizarre twists and turns at every clip, and a controversial lesbian sequence between the two female leads that drew more attention during its original release than the film itself did. It will now of course remain a curio as Scott?s first venture into filmmaking.

Top Gun

2) Top Gun (1986): The film that propelled Tom Cruise higher than the aerodynamic aircraft he flew, and made Paramount an absolute fortune. The film became a sort of benchmark for the 1980s itself, bombastic, loud, hyper edited, screaming action alongside ear splitting music accompaniment. Top Gun is almost the archetype of the 1980s and spawned a sort of palette for this kind of action film which still exists in full frontal force today as a blueprint for today?s over the top indulgent films. That said, it remains a stepping stone for a lot of fans who grew up with this picture, it was a huge pop cultural patchwork of sights and sounds for the young 80s generation who experienced it originally and most importantly, it put Tony Scott on the map as an extremely bankable film director and someone who could be trusted to put together the kind of production that studios clamored for during this Reagan era of the 1980s, and ever more so today. Scott would go to try and strike twice while the iron was hot with Cruise, in Days of Thunder, which pretty much this time kept Tom Cruise on the ground as a race car driver, but still retaining the kind of Top Gun verve, a few years after this film.

The Last Boy Scout

3) The Last Boy Scout (1991): A fun popcorn film raised to the highest art, this one finds Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans working together in tandem (although arguably not like the Lethal Weapon of the ink is black the page is white pairings) to solve a murder. Full of fun cynical dialogue which is endlessly quotable by the generation that grew up with it, smart, full of the glossy sheen that became Scott?s style, which is not a bad thing at all for this picture, it saved Bruce Willis? career in some ways during this time (the actor had just come off of the atrocious Hudson Hawk) and did make a profit and especially had a great life in home video. Willis and Wayans chew the scenery like bubble gum all over this one.

True Romance

4) True Romance (1993): THIS is the magnum opus in the Scott resume in my opinion. Scott was pegged (as a lot of directors were at that time) to develop a script that had been written by Quentin Tarantino, who had just become Hollywood?s newest wunkerkind after his success with Reservoir Dogs. Scott finally had an opportunity to develop material that was quirky, dialogue driven, violent in a more realistic sense, and full of surreal and wild imagery. He proved himself worthy of the task. Lovebirds Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette become more and more deeper involved in a lovers-on?the-lam kind of narrative that is elevated by the always punchy Tarantino script and the ham fisted, extremely macho and confident direction by Scott, who in a way is almost channeling Sam Peckinpah here. An ensemble cast rounds out the action, and what?s most pleasing is seeing one Dennis Hopper, who made his career on playing off-kilter, out-there characters, as one of the more subdued normal people in the film! If you?ve never seen any of Scott?s work, this is the essential one.

Crimson Tide

5) Crimson Tide (1995): Pairing again with the producer duo of Jerry Bruckheimer and the late Don Simpson, responsible for Top Gun, Scott finds himself submerged in the throes of a submarine in this outing. U.S. vs Russia power plays are afoot, as well as the ones between Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, as Commander and Lieutenant respectively. Once again, the pumped up, Top Gun style soundtrack and schematic applies, and once again it?s a pretty obvious B-movie story when you break it all down, but also once again, the style of Tony Scott elevates this to a fist in the air white knuckler of an action film; he knows how to draw performances out of his actors (the leads especially) that take this from what could have been a straight-to-video pathetic mess of celluloid to another great, leave your brain at the door but that?s the point, smart production.

There are plenty of other films, some favorites I may have forgotten, Beverly Hills Cop 2, The Enemy of the State, The Fan, Man on Fire, Domino, the remake of Joseph Sargent?s 1974 crackerjack masterpiece The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 which also starred Denzel Washington and what stands now as final production, another train out of control film, 2010?s Unstoppable, yet again with Washington and Star Trek?s Chris Pine. All of these films, like the ones singled out, had that knack and veracity of having the Tony Scott stamp affixed firmly in every single frame, frames of films that pump one up, get the circulation going, and then keeps it going, an absolute cornucopia of sights and sounds to ones nervous and circulatory system.

One is encouraged to revisit or visit for the first time some of these films. It is not farfetched or wrong to say that these films are not for everyone. They will never be for everyone. And that?s not also to say that the fans of Tony Scott productions were those that maybe didn?t know better, or maybe knew something that others didn?t. It all depends on taste and how one looks at the works of Tony Scott. But one thing can remain crystal clear, Tony Scott showed everyone how to have a good time at the cinema, employed the apex of the term escapism for his audience, fooled and tooled around with their sights and senses, and had them leaving for the exits when it was all done, amazed, enraptured, and delighted if anything else. And how is that a bad thing? When all is said and done, movies are ENTERTAINMENT, whatever filmmakers and artists do within their frames, whatever is put into narratives, whatever we learn or are taught or whatever films are trying to convey to us, about a sundry amount of topics from the pedestrian to the absolutely essential important parts of our lives, movies are ENTERTAINMENT first and foremost. And nobody in a way arguably understood that concept more than Tony Scott. In a world that seems to be getting crazier and more intense to live in these days as the world revolves forward and forward, we need a Tony Scott more than ever today. RIP Tony.
