Family ordered to 'dispose' of their pet miniature pig by the health ...

PIX11 first learned about the plight of Petey the pig two month ago.? He resides with Danielle Forgione, and her family in queens, but recently, the Health Department came after the playful porker and his adoptive family.

The city says that because the Juliana pig is considered a farm animal, the law states he can no longer live inside their apartment.

?It actually states, after receiving a complaint that we were harboring the illegal animal, so they are taking action,? Forgione said.

Petey the pig is being targeted by the NYC Health Department

That action enforced by the Health Department is to quote ?dispose? of the pig in the next 15 days ? or they may come and dispose of him.

?It could mean euthanizing him because they consider him like an exotic,? Forgione said.

But what exactly is deemed an exotic or wild animal? The health department says ?it is any animal which is naturally inclined to do harm and inflicting harm upon a human being?

For Danielle, her children, and those living in the area, Petey is just a house-broken pet.

?These guys (Julianas) are bred as pets. No farm animals and no livestock ? just everyday pets,? Forgione said.
Danielle and her husband officially put their house on the market Tuesday, trying to move out quickly to save Petey and avoid the grief his loss could cause their children if the Health Department forces him out

In the meantime, she is hoping more people will sign her online-petition found at change.org to modify the New York City animal law, and allow the ownerships of mini pigs.
