American Cancer Society seeking participants for research study

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The American Cancer Society is preparing to launch a new research study, and is looking for help from Lowcountry residents.

Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are asked to enroll in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study-3. The study will be used to help researchers understand lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

The ACS is looking for 800 residents in Charleston to take place in the study. The public can enroll online at?cps3charleston.org?for one of the following dates and locations:

  • Roper Berkeley Day Hospital: Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 7-10: 30 a.m.
  • Trident Medical Center: Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 7-10: 30 a.m.
  • Bon Secours Saint Francis Hospital: Wednesday, January 30, 2013, 3-6:30 p.m.
  • Summerville Medical Center: Wednesday, January 30, 2013, 3-6:30 p.m.
  • Medical University of South Carolina: Thursday, January 31, 2013, 7-10: 30 a.m. & 3:30-7 p.m.
  • The Jewish Community Center: Thursday, January 31, 2013, 7-10: 30 a.m.
  • Moncks Corner Medical Center: Thursday, January 31, 2013, 3-6:30 p.m.
  • East Cooper Medical Center (Mount Pleasant): Friday, February 1, 2013, 8-11:30 a.m.
  • Seacoast Church Summerville: Friday, February 1, 2013, 8-11:30 a.m.

Participants will be asked to complete a survey packet relating to health and lifestyle, take measurements, give a blood sample, and sign a consent form. The process normally takes 1-hour and 15-minutes.
